Robert Verl Mallory & Louise Irene Witherow Mallory

Photo Dates 1919

Note from Ryan:  Robert Verl Mallory was a pilot in World War I.  Based on the dates the airfield in the photo was in service and called by the name it is labeled it is believed the photo was taken in 1919.  Robert V. Mallory is in the back row and the second man from the Captain in the middle.   He is wearing the more common enlisted hat and standing next to what I believe is a corporal  (see the close up of him cropped from this photo below).

The text on the picture reads:  "Squadron "O" - Air Service Aeronautics - Wilbur Wright Air Service Depot - Fairfield, O (Ohio) Capt. Wm. Hunt Murphy, A.S. (A.) U.S.A Commanding"  Click on the photo above for a large (1MB) medium resolution file.  The actual photo is 6 inches high and 32 inches long.  It had to be scanned in 3 separate pieces then seamed back together and touched up in a four hour process resulting in a 208MB high resolution file!

To read more about this airfield go to this link:  Wilbur Wright Air Service Depot - specifically read the entry for January 10, 1919.  With a little research I found the two primary aircraft used he Robert V. Mallory would have been flying at this training facility in 1919 - from the looks of these birds it is amazing he lived to tell about it (click for larger pics).
